Cosima

Cosima  is a sculptor of Alpine and Mediterranean origins creating sculptures that are mutable, organic or imply movement, as well as performances and installations. She is interested in the dynamic and evolving nature of form and explores materiality, space, time, as well as the physical and symbolic resonance of these elements within a continuous cycle of life, death and rebirth. Her perspective is shaped by the experience of existing in a sentient and wayfaring body.

Cosima’s practice is rooted in an ecofeminist and new materialist worldview. She envisions it as a compost heap in which diverse fragments break down, transforming into fertile ground for new forms of life to emerge. The driving force is a will to celebrate multiplicity and metamorphosis, as well as a pursuit of the transcendent; to find the timeless, meaningful, and deeply felt within the everyday. Primarily an act of care, it is also an act of resistance; against the classifications and rhythms of capitalist and patriarchal systems that have severed us from embodied and ancestral knowledge, disrupting the communal and cyclical.

Through research methods like flow of consciousness, collaging, dreaming and dancing she brings forth what lies within. In the studio, material and technical explorations - from traditional metal work to unexpected organic alchemies - open up a space for thinking-through-making. The forms that materialise may take on different shapes yet they always exist in relation to her body. Like webs in a spider’s cognitive field, they are an extension of herself and also bridge the gap between individual and collective; inviting ontological reflections and mythological or cosmological speculations. Which of the echoes of possible prehistories/futures will we answer to?
