Organic Abstraction: Nature as an Emotional Language
Eelco Hilgersom is a contemporary Dutch artist whose work lies at the intersection of art, design, and natural architecture. Born in Amsterdam in 1979, he has been fascinated since childhood by the structures and patterns spontaneously generated by nature. This fascination translates into abstract sculptures that reinterpret living organisms through organic forms, reflective surfaces, and a vibrant color palette.
His most renowned series, Habitat, is inspired by the ability of certain living beings — such as insects or amphibians — to communicate emotions or warnings through the color and texture of their skin. Each piece, composed of hundreds of individually curved elements assembled by hand, represents a symbolic creature with a name that evokes a specific emotion: Braver, Fierce, Juicy… The mirrored surface multiplies the viewer’s reflection, creating a direct link between the work and the emotion it conveys.
Hilgersom sets no limits on his creative process: he works with glass, resins, metals, and synthetic materials, constantly exploring new techniques to bring his ideas to life. His experimental approach has led to collaborations with brands such as Tiffany & Co., Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design, and The College Hotel Amsterdam, integrating his pieces into high-end design environments.
Eelco Hilgersom transforms the ephemeral beauty of nature into enduring objects of contemplation, where each curve and each color invites a deep emotional connection.
