Woods

Nicholas Woods (Lynchburg, Virginia, USA, 1971) lives and works between Ithaca (New York) and Mallorca. Raised in New York and later in Madrid, Woods has spent extended periods in both Spain and the United States. He studied at the Tyler School of Art in Rome, Italy, and graduated with honors from Middlebury College in Vermont in 1993.

Since the beginning of his artistic career, Woods has maintained a deep connection with themes such as identity, sexuality, nature, portraiture, and landscape—recurrent subjects in 20th-century American art. His work has evolved through various media: pastel drawings on paper, site-specific interventions using pigment powders directly on walls, and large-scale paintings. In this new phase, he embarks on a free and emotional exploration of the expressive possibilities of color and painting, using urethane in a fluid and experimental manner.

Woods' paintings have been exhibited in major museums and galleries across Europe and the United States, including the Es Baluard Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Mallorca, the CAC Málaga, the Pelaires Gallery in Palma de Mallorca, the Rena Bransten Gallery in San Francisco, the Isa Galerie in Bombay, Slowtrack in Madrid, Tim Sheward Projects in London, The Royal Standard in Liverpool, and many more.

Among his most recent projects are the mural on the glass facade of the Ibiza Gran Hotel and several works for the permanent collection of the Hôtel de Crillon in Paris. His work is represented in significant public collections, especially in Spain, such as the CAC Museum in Málaga, the La Caixa Foundation, the Pilar i Joan Miró Foundation in Mallorca, and the Benetton Collection in Milan, among others.

From 1999 to 2004, Woods collaborated with Spanish artist Mónica Fuster, focusing on site-specific projects. In 2004, a selection of his drawings on plexiglass was part of a contemporary drawing exhibition at the CAC Museum in Málaga. In 2003, his installation "Lair" was part of a 25-year retrospective of art in Spain at the MUVIM in Valencia. Additionally, in 2002, he was selected to receive the Public Art Award from the Fundación Altadís for his project "Helium," in an exhibition organized by the Palais de Tokyo curators, Nicolas Bourriaud and Jérôme Sans.

Over the years, Woods has continued his artistic development between Mallorca, where he has lived for the last 10 years, and New York, constantly exploring new forms and techniques within the field of painting, in a process always guided by spontaneity and the liquid nature of the materials he uses.
