Sophie
Wahlquist
Sophie Wahlquist (b.1983, Germany. lives and works in Mallorca, Spain) received a BFA from Parsons The New School for Design. Recent exhibitions include the CURATED section Collectible’s inaugural fair conceived by NY based independent curator Sonya Tamaddon. Taking inspiration from New York poet, critic and Museum of Modern Art curator Frank O’Hara‘s 1960 poem Having a Coke With You for the exhibition’s curatorial theme Wahlquist conceived When The Sun Sank, employing Mallorquin metalsmithing traditions for the first time. The artist has exhibited a solo presentation at Frieze Los Angeles’s 2023 edition. Additional exhibitions include: Lace of Love and Bones’ at Baert Gallery, Los Angeles; ‘ Between Dog and Woolf ’ Parlour Gallery, London; SPRING/ BREAK Art Show, Los Angeles; ‘Full Circle’, Kellogg Doolittle House, Joshua Tree, CA. Her work is included in the Zabludowicz Collection amongst many prominent European and American private collections. Primarily using unabashedly high-key colors, the artist paints, sculpts and welds her key subjects—flora and fauna from both ancestral landscapes and those imagined. Oftentimes functional, her three dimensional work creates an immersive component to the sensibility to her narrative paintings, collages and sculptural installation. Since relocating to Mallorca in 2023, Wahlquist has begun to integrate local metalsmithing traditions into her multidisciplinary practice.
This June she will be exhibiting a new body of work with Eclecticó Sudio at Can Art fair, Ibiza.
