Hilgemann

Hilgemann is a Dutch sculptor, born in Germany. From the outset, fundamental research into the material has characterized Ewerdt Hilgemann’s work. Following experiments with subtle, white wooden light reliefs in the 1960s that aligned with the ZERO style, he focused his work as a conceptual sculptor on the use of natural stone and steel in geometric forms in series: positive versus negative.

In 1980, he introduced chance and natural forces beyond his control into his work. In doing so, he was confronted with the unpredictability of the laws of nature, to which he had to adapt quickly and anticipate.

His works are featured in numerous international museum collections. In 2013, a major exhibition was held on Park Avenue in New York, showcasing the artist’s large stainless steel structures. In 2020, the Kröller-Müller Museum paid tribute to the artist with a solo exhibition.
