Downie

Helen Downie (b. 1965) is a London-based artist widely recognised for her distinctive and expressive approach to painting. Working under the moniker UnskilledWorker, she creates intimate and evocative works that combine human figures, nature and elements of the ephemeral and fantastical. Her paintings are characterised by a highly personal visual language that moves between vulnerability, imagination and emotional resonance.

Her work has been widely documented and has attracted a substantial international audience, appearing in publications such as Artnet, The New York Times, Vanity Fair, Vogue, Dazed, Harper’s Bazaar and i-D. Her paintings are held in public and private collections internationally and have been exhibited in galleries and institutions across London, Hong Kong, Seoul, Madrid, Tokyo and Shanghai.

In 2015, her work was presented at the Minsheng Art Museum in Shanghai alongside artists including Rachel Feinstein, Jenny Holzer and Cao Fei. The following year, a specially commissioned portrait appeared as a limited-edition cover of Bazaar Art, and her work was exhibited alongside that of Grayson Perry in a project marking the 40th anniversary of Shape Arts. In 2017, Gucci launched a 40-piece collection featuring her artwork, showcased across London, New York, Paris, Milan and Shanghai, while her paintings were also included in Great Women Artists at Mother, London.

Subsequent exhibitions and presentations have included Mark Shand’s Adventures and Curiosities at Hauser & Wirth (2018); exhibitions at the D Museum, Seoul, and the Museo ABC, Madrid (2019); and a 2020 exhibition at Hauser & Wirth alongside Anish Kapoor, Antony Gormley and Richard Wentworth in support of the Hospital Rooms charity. In 2021, W1 Curates presented her work across one of the world’s largest permanent digital public art screens in London. Her first solo exhibition in Italy, One Cup of Sugar, opened at Luca Tommasi Arte in Milan in 2022, followed by When You’re a Boy at Daniel Cooney Fine Art, New York, in 2024. More recently, she presented Hiraeth, a two-person exhibition with Alice Gavalet, at Patricia Low Contemporary, Venice (2025).

A committed advocate for women’s voices, Downie’s work frequently engages with questions of gender while continually pushing the boundaries of her practice. Deeply invested in inclusion, diversity and freedom of expression, she has donated artworks in support of numerous charitable organisations, including The Shuktara Trust, Maya Foundation’s Project Lift, Women for Women International, Shape Arts, MAG (Mines Advisory Group), Hospital Rooms, The Big Issue and Secret 7″ in aid of Help Refugees.
