Iván Estrada
The son of a blacksmith and a pastry chef, Iván Estrada draws in trades such as goldsmithing and automotive mechanics, both central to his upbringing, into his artistic practice.
Through his work, he proposes a re‑examination of industrial materials and natural objects, revealing the threads that connect them to art and how these do not limit its transformative possibilities. His pieces, based on production processes from both fields, reveal the physical and visual condition of each element, influenced by passages of memory.
With a strong interest in materials sourced from and recovered from metallurgy and various mechanical sources, his work reaches basic two‑dimensional geometry and opens up three‑dimensional possibilities. He gives space and opportunity, through certain processes, to random forms and results often outside of his control.
He studied Visual Arts at the Jalisco Ministry of Culture, and has participated in creative workshops with various artists, including José Luis Sánchez Rull and Efraín Bartolomé. His work has been exhibited in galleries including the Alliance Française (Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico); Casa Mexi Barcelona (Barcelona, Spain); and Galería Central (Zapopan, Jalisco, Mexico); and in museums including MUPAG(Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico); and the Zacatecas Museum of Art (MURA) (Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico). Currently, he works in his studio in Tonalá, Jalisco, Mexico.
