Lefebvre
Nicolas Lefebvre (b. 1982, Boulogne-Billancourt, France) lives and works between Paris, Barbizon and Lisbon. Drawn to art from an early age, he grew up immersed in the worlds of museums, antique dealers and auction houses, environments that would profoundly shape his future practice. His childhood was marked by extensive travel with his family, exposing him to a wide range of cultures and ways of seeing. This relationship between art and travel became a defining aspect of his aesthetic, alongside a longstanding fascination with the sea.
After studying art history at IESA and the École du Louvre, Lefebvre worked in the galleries of Saint-Germain-des-Prés and at the Hôtel Drouot. A commission from gallery owner Jacques Lacoste took him to Peru, where he located furniture designed by Jean Royère in Lima during the 1950s. Upon returning to Paris, he collaborated with Axel Vervoordt on projects including the Biennale des Antiquaires and the Kanaal Foundation in Antwerp. Between 2004 and 2007, he assisted auctioneers Jean-Claude Binoche and Alexandre Giquello in organising sales dedicated to Pre-Columbian, African, Oceanic and Amazonian art, areas that closely reflected his own interests and research. This experience proved formative, deepening his expertise and encouraging him to build a personal collection. In 2008, he opened a gallery in Saint-Tropez that quickly became known for its unconventional presentation of paintings, photographs, furniture and curiosities.
A self-taught artist, Lefebvre situates his practice within the tradition of the Dada cabinet, embracing chance, unexpected encounters and unusual juxtapositions as both method and aesthetic principle. Drawn to notions of the sacred, he creates a visual language composed of organic and handcrafted forms, bringing together precious and natural materials in works centred on the Egyptian ankh. From these compositions emerge his recurring mother-goddess figures, symbols of the connection between humanity and nature that have become the defining motif of his practice.
Since 2010, Lefebvre has exhibited in galleries, foundations and institutions across France, Morocco, England, Portugal and Hong Kong, while also extending his creative activity into architecture, fashion, theatre and music. Patricia Low Contemporary presents his work for the first time. Across a wide range of materials, references and disciplines, his practice remains guided by a consistent aspiration: the possibility of bringing different cultures and civilisations into dialogue through art.
