Edith Dekyndt at Can Garita

23.06 - 28.07.2025

Can Garita & Los Enamorados are pleased to present Edith Dekyndt’s first solo exhibition in Spain, a highlight of this year’s CAN Art programming. The exhibition features an evocative new body of work—including sculptures and a video installation—created specifically for this occasion. During her stay in Ibiza in 2023, Dekyndt became captivated by a quiet but profound ecological crisis affecting the island. For over two decades, Ibiza has faced an invasion of snakes, unintentionally introduced through the import of ancient olive trees from mainland Spain. These snakes, arriving as unseen eggs in the trees' root balls, have disrupted the island’s delicate biodiversity, especially threatening the native lizard species that have inhabited and balanced the ecosystem for millennia.

In response to this ecological tension, Dekyndt initiated a project rooted in both environmental awareness and poetic transformation. Working with snake skins collected by local residents, she meticulously sewed them together to form a flag—an emblematic and tactile response to the island’s changing natural landscape. This flag was later filmed in 2024, suspended and moving in the wind at Puerta del Cielo (Heaven’s Gate)—a symbolic gesture situated between resistance and memorial. This exhibition invites reflection on the fragile intersections between nature, displacement, and adaptation, expressed through the artist’s singular material sensitivity and conceptual depth.

EDITH DEKYNDT (b. 1960 in Ypres, Belgium). She works be-tween Brussels (BE) and Berlin (DE). Dekyndt works across video, sculpture, installation, drawing and sound to address timeless concerns of light, time and space in the most subtle ways. Throughout her work, she manifests a profound interest in physical phenomenons and ephemeral incidents by paying close attention to materials and their transient nature. She transforms her sensual perceptions to create a conceptually rich and materiall engaged visual language.

Can Garita is a contemporary art gallery uniquely situated in a traditional caseta de varadero—a former fishermen’s hut—on the island of Ibiza. Founded by Sarah Suco Torres, who previously worked with leading galleries in New York, Brussels, and Paris, the gallery launched its first exhibition in Sa Caleta in July 2023 during CAN Art Fair. Now expanding with a new space in collaboration with Los Enamorados in Portinatx (North Ibiza), Can Garita continues its mission to bring cutting-edge contemporary art into dialogue with Ibiza’s vernacular architecture and natural landscape. Deeply inspired by the island’s symbolic and functional spaces, Can Garita aims to rethink the way we experience art—merging tradition with innovation, solitude with community, and nature with culture.
