"SEU" Miriam Dema at Can Garita

Can Garita and Ibiza Interiors present a solo exhibition of new works by the Spanish artist Miriam Dema (Barcelona, 1985), created following her participation in the Las Cicadas Art Residency (Ibiza, 2023). The exhibition coincides with the celebration of CAN Art Fair and brings together a series of paintings that expand her exploration of perception, intimacy and the poetics of the everyday.

During her time in Ibiza, Dema immersed herself in the rhythms, light and material atmosphere of the island. Removed from her usual context, she developed a body of work marked by slowness and attention, where gesture becomes more deliberate and painting transforms into a space for contemplation. The works presented at Can Garita reflect this process: subtle and sensory compositions in which color, texture and silence enter into dialogue.

Dema’s practice is grounded in a delicate observation of the familiar. Her paintings evoke fragments of domestic life, objects and moments that, in this new series, are distilled into more essential forms. The palette, influenced by the natural tones of Ibiza, from sunlit surfaces to soft shadows and mineral nuances, reinforces a sense of calm and presence.

At the core of this work is painting as a temporal experience. The surfaces, restrained yet layered, suggest both immediacy and duration. Between what is revealed and what remains suspended, the work invites a slower and more attentive gaze. In this sense, Dema’s proposal resonates with a contemporary sensibility that values contemplation and the importance of stillness.

The exhibition at Can Garita extends the dialogue initiated during the residency, bringing the lived experience into the exhibition space. At the same time, it reflects the spirit of Las Cicadas: fostering artistic practices rooted in place, material and meaningful exchange. A journey where painting and time intertwine, and where the viewer is invited not only to observe, but to inhabit the quiet intensity of the work.
