Frits Achten at Los Enamorados

Los Enamorados presents "Nests", an exhibition by Frits Achten coinciding with the fifth edition of CAN Art Fair. The opening will take place on June 24 from 7 to 9 pm, and the exhibition will remain on view daily until July 28.

For many years, Achten worked as a professor of art history and visual studies, although his artistic practice draws inspiration primarily from outside the traditional canon. His work engages with folk art, art brut, ethnographic objects and ritual forms, developing sculptures with an organic and expressive appearance that seem to exist somewhere between the ancestral and the imaginary.

The pieces are made from papier mâché, built layer by layer without molds or internal structures. This method allows each sculpture to evolve intuitively, through a process similar to the natural growth of a nest or shell. The result is a series of forms that are both lightweight and resilient, where texture and imperfection preserve the trace of manual labor and a direct relationship with the material.

The exhibition is presented within the setting of Los Enamorados in Portinatx, a space facing the sea that combines traditional architecture, design and an atmosphere shaped by the slow rhythm of the north of the island. In this context, Achten’s sculptures establish a natural dialogue with the landscape, reinforcing the ideas of shelter, growth and transformation that run throughout the exhibition.
