Aproh
Born in 1996, Adèle Aproh lives and works in Paris, France.
Layer by layer, the artist mobilises a unique visual lexicon to create fantastical, fictional worlds. Her drawings, masterfully executed in coloured pencil and pastel, tell stories within stories, unfolding a complex universe rich in symbolism and diverse cultural references. She addresses themes such as identity, uniformity and social and workplace hierarchies with a surreal sense of absurdity. In her work, she explores how identity is constructed through social codes such as standardised clothing, hairstyles and facial features, but also through the actions of her protagonists.
Drawing on her own experiences, Aproh builds a personal visual repertoire through which she reflects on her culture and environment. She is a regular visitor to the local library dedicated to fashion history, where she leafs through books that document archival designs by Issey Miyake and Kenzo, and during creative blocks she finds calm and inspiration in Miyazaki’s characters on screen. Stitching together, line by line, a diverse web of personal and cultural references, Aproh weaves a multi-layered story about identity and inclusion.
