Alice
Gavalet
Based in Nogent-sur-Marne, near Paris, Alice Gavalet works at the intersection of design, sculpture, and painting. Trained at the École Olivier de Serres and the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs (graduating in 2003), she turned to her independent practice in 2010 after collaborating with major fashion and interior design houses, notably with Elizabeth Garouste.
Drawing forms the foundation of her work, guiding the creation of pieces that combine ceramics, metal, wood, and textiles with bold color and geometric structure. Across her ceramics, lamps, and guéridons, the boundary between utility and art dissolves. Her vessels—often anthropomorphic and shaped from clay slabs—are animated by patterns evoking textiles and architectural grids, where distortion and fluidity suggest fragments of memory and desire rather than fixed forms.
Balancing playfulness with quiet strength, her work draws on influences from art brut and the decorative arts. Gavalet has exhibited internationally, with solo exhibitions at Galerie Italienne, Paris (2022) and Galerie Michele Hayem, Paris (2020), and group presentations including La Galerie XXI, New York (2023) and Patricia Low Contemporary, Gstaad (2023). In 2025, she presented a two-person exhibition with Patricia Low in Venice. Her work has also been featured in the Cheongju International Craft Biennale (2021), as well as in Architectural Digest, Financial Times, and Wallpaper.
