Gavalet

Alice Gavalet (b. 1978) lives and works in Nogent-sur-Marne. A graduate of the École nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs (EnsAD) and the École nationale supérieure des Arts Appliqués et des Métiers d’Art (EnsAAMA) in Paris, she began her career under the guidance of designer Elisabeth Garouste. Inspired by the world of textiles and classical forms, Gavalet has developed a distinctive artistic language that sits at the intersection of sculpture, painting and design. Her practice encompasses a vibrant body of unique and instinctive works, including vases, tables, pedestal tables and lamps.

Her process begins with drawing, a daily discipline that allows her to formalise ideas and bring new works to life. She then combines materials such as ceramics, metal, wood and fabric with brightly coloured geometric forms to create objects that are playful, strong and sincere. For Gavalet, ceramics is a game: every stage of the process must remain joyful and intuitive. Her instinctive approach to colour and pattern is reinforced through the use of engobe for its matte finish and by a spontaneous technique based on slabs and coils. Her influences range from textiles and Art Brut to the decorative arts, drawing inspiration from figures such as Betty Woodman, Ettore Sottsass, Max Ernst, Jean Dubuffet and Paul Cox.

Her works possess a strong presence without being provocative, asserting themselves with natural confidence. This distinctive signature has led to exhibitions throughout France and internationally in galleries, art centres and art fairs. Her work has entered the collections of the Mobilier National through its annual acquisition programme, and a selection of her handcrafted pedestal tables, made in chamotte clay and finished with layered slips and glazes in a tartan pattern inspired by the institution’s colours, has been produced as a limited edition in collaboration with The Invisible Collection. Recent two-person exhibitions include Vessel State at Patricia Low Contemporary in Gstaad (2023) and Hiraeth, alongside Helen Downie, in Venice (2025). She also participated in Paris Design Week in 2020, and her work has been featured in publications such as Architectural Digest, the Financial Times and Wallpaper Magazine.
