Murillo

Moving between several disciplines such as painting, collage, and installation—combining different methodologies and visual solutions from one medium to another and across various supports—Ubay Murillo works around the image we have of —and project onto— the contemporary body in the aftermath of the economic crisis. At the same time, he reflects on the very disciplines through which he works.

This approach is enriched by an investigation into how the images produced by the avant-gardes in the creation of a new social and physical body permeated the imagination of consumer capitalism, and how they have shaped the body we now both inhabit and imagine.

A dismembered, stretched, modified body pushed to impossible limits, battered and used as a support for a culture of capital and consumption. These consumed images suggest how the utopian world imagined by artists at the beginning of the 20th century may end up resembling a dystopia in our present and immediate future.

Ubay Murillo works with several galleries around the world, including Galería Artizar in Spain, GE Gallery in Mexico, and Galleria Costantini in Milan. He has held important exhibitions in cities such as Tenerife, Madrid, Santander, Milan, Bremen, Berlin, and Mexico City, among many others, and regularly participates in fairs such as Zona Maco, Art Verona, Artesantander, and Estampa.
