Matamoro

He is a painter who began his training at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Complutense University of Madrid, where he graduated in Painting and Printmaking. He started exhibiting his work at a very young age, in 1984, at the Caixavigo space in Vilagarcía de Arousa. From 1985 onwards he became associated with the Atlántica group, a decisive stage in his career.

He has held solo and group exhibitions in numerous cities across Spain and Europe, as well as in institutions such as CGAC and the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de La Spezia. He has also taken part in fairs such as ARCO, Estampa and Just Madrid, and in group shows at CGAC and the Museo Nacional de Escultura in Valladolid. Among his recent exhibitions are A Mirada Acesa (MARCO, Vigo, 2021), El Peso de la Luz (Trinta, 2022) and UVNT Art Fair (2023).

His awards and grants include the “Xóvenes Valores” grant from the Diputación de Pontevedra and the Talleres de Arte Actual at the Círculo de Bellas Artes, as well as the Colmeiro grant and others such as those from the Joint Hispano-American Committee in New York (1988) and the Academy of Fine Arts, History and Archaeology in Rome (1990). His work was acquired at the 1st Unión Fenosa Exhibition and he received the second medal at the Pontevedra Biennial in 1990.

His painting is entirely non-figurative, with dreamlike references and abstract figures that recall Odilon Redon. Whimsical graphic signs, impossible objects set in an idealised space and carefully harmonised painterly marks define his distinctive style. His work is informed by Minimal Art, and his surfaces possess a dense, almost corporeal materiality. He is represented in institutional collections in both Galicia and Italy, and is regarded as one of the leading artists of his generation.
