Drawing inspiration from architects and designers of the twentieth-century modern movement, the artist depicts domestic environments that appear stripped back yet are profoundly human in the small details of everyday life: an open book, a vase of flowers, a toy left behind in the middle of activity.
José Lourenço immortalises moments through the sharp shadows and textures that permeate his paintings. Oscillating between dream (evoked in natural settings that stretch as far as the eye can see) and hypothetical reality (materialised through the presence of mundane objects), the artist creates his own habitat, a shelter in which he lives and finds protection.
