Kirk

Magda Kirk is a Polish artist born in 1990. She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts, Painting Department, in Gdańsk, Poland (2015). In her painting, she focuses on the body in its cultural and social context, creating images of anonymous, incomplete bodies in a hazy, dreamlike atmosphere.

Inspired by models, bodybuilders and fictional characters such as superheroes, she plays with cultural patterns around the image of the male and female body, exploring their impact on contemporary identity, self-perception and self-expression. By combining humour and horror, beauty and ugliness, tenderness and aggression, she reveals the ambiguous emotions that accompany our intimate relationship with the body as both subject and object.

She uses popular motifs and symbols from tattoo culture, trash graffiti, cartoons and broadly defined pop culture as a means of expression, often fusing them into an indeterminate noise that becomes the very flesh of these bodies.

Her painting process is a kind of meditation, built on layering multiple veils of colour and airbrushed scribbles to create an impression of luminous yet unreal realism.
