Nimyu

Nimyu was born in China, obtained a BFA from the Central Academy of Fine Arts and later graduated from the New York Academy of Art. Currently based in Tokyo. Aware of the information-driven society and the underlying factors that influence our understanding of the world, Nimyu explores the complexity of personal identity through works in different mediums. Her work often seems surreal and whimsical, with figures often in a state of both familiarity and strangeness, cueing viewers to question the credibility of the stories we hear and tell ourselves. The skeletal elements that often appear in her work symbolize the deep-seated beliefs and values that we rely on when constructing ourselves, and suggest the fragility of identity. The plant counterparts to the bones symbolize vitality and regeneration, reflecting the evolving and diverse nature of individual identity. By incorporating fictional animal elements and AI-generated errors into her creations, Nimyu emphasizes the random and accidental elements of identity construction, symbolizing the absurd ways in which information shapes our lives. Through her work, Nimyu suggests that personal identity is not just a fixed label, but a dynamic process full of unknowns and possibilities, constantly redefined and constructed through information, memory and experience.
