Llabres Art Contemporani

Palma de Mallorca, España

Pep Llabrés, founder and director, has spent many years deeply embedded in the art world. He worked for nearly two decades at Joan Oliver “Maneu” Galeria d’Art, serving as its director for the final eight years. In the last stage of that gallery, he set out to shift its exhibition programme, moving beyond a model focused mainly on local artists.

He served as President of AIGAB (Associació Independent de Galeries d’Art), a position he stepped down from when the gallery he directed closed in November 2014. In April 2015, he opened his own exhibition space, PEP LLABRES ART CONTEMPORANI, on Carrer Sant Jaume in Palma. The project was conceived to continue the direction he had begun earlier: supporting young artists beyond the local scene, while also bringing in others with a more established trajectory.

Most exhibitions are built around a clear intention to encourage participation—by the general public, artists and curators—as well as to host events connected to each show. The gallery’s identity is strongly defined by abstract languages, often linked to geometry. This geometric approach is understood both in two-dimensional work and in three-dimensional form. The artists represented offer their own distinct visions of space: some lean towards more organic situations, while others develop their imagery through more rigorous, rule-based constructivist frameworks. At times, other artists associated with the gallery intentionally disrupt this identity, proposing different languages that range from figuration to abstraction.
