Llabres Art Contemporani
Palma de Mallorca, Spain
Pep Llabrés, director and owner of the gallery, has a long career deeply embedded in the art world. He worked for almost two decades at Joan Oliver “Maneu” Galeria d’Art, serving as director for the last eight years. In the final stage of his time there, he set out to shift the gallery’s exhibition programme, moving away from being solely a space for mainly local artists.
He served as President of AIGAB (Associació Independent de Galeries d’Art), a position he resigned from when the gallery he directed closed its doors in November 2014. In April 2015 he inaugurated his own exhibition space, PEP LLABRES ART CONTEMPORANI, on Sant Jaume Street in Palma, with the aim of continuing the direction he had begun previously, supporting young artists not only from the local scene while also incorporating others with a more established trajectory.
In most of its exhibitions there is a clear intention to encourage the participation of the general public, artists, curators and all kinds of events related to the show. The gallery has a strong identity rooted in abstract languages, often linked to geometry. This geometric character is understood both in the two dimensional and the three dimensional realm. The artists propose their own vision of space through their work, sometimes in more organic situations and in other cases through imaginaries developed under more strictly constructivist approaches. Other artists associated with the gallery occasionally break with this identity, introducing different languages that range from figuration to abstraction.
