FEBRUARY 25th-27th 2022
Since the beginning of Urvanity in 2017, Mahou has been part of our project and is doing so again in this sixth edition. This year we will continue to work together to develop cultural and artistic activations, as part of our quest to reconnect people with art and their environment.
This year, we will once again intervene in the Espacio Mahou, which will host our UVNT Mahou Talks, this time with the architects of PAREID.

Everywhere and Nowhere
Everything is connected. Pipes, tubes, wires and cables transfer physical and digital matter through vast infrastructural networks. These elements span cities, landscapes, continents and are often out in the open but when followed lead to no beginning or end, abruptly vanishing behind walls, into the ground or connecting to circuits and subsumed into a large whole. They have the characteristic of being ubiquitous while disappearing in plain view; they are everywhere and nowhere. The language of excess, fluidity, connectivity and transmission, are rendered in the space through the use of three materials: tubes, lights, metal. Lining the walls, ceiling and parts of the floor, visitors are immersed by the machine-like organs and red glow; all of which are familiar and at the same time alien.
About PAREID
Deborah Lopez and Hadin Charbel are architects and founders of Pareid, an interdisciplinary design and research studio currently based in London. Their work takes approaches from diverse fields and contexts, addressing issues related to climate, ecology, human perception, machine sentience, and its ability to alter current modes of existence through imminent fictions.
Both are lecturers at the Bartlett School of Architecture at UCL on the B-Pro programme, where they lead a research group, entitled 'Monumental Wastelands'.
Awarded with the Monbukagakusho (MEXT) scholarship from 2014-2018, they received their Master of Engineering in the Field of Architecture from the University of Tokyo (T-ADS).
Their research has been featured and presented at conferences in the United States and Europe, including ACADIA Post-human Frontiers, Technarte Art+Technology Conference, COCA First International Conference in Architectural Communication, and at ACADIA Disciplines & Disruption (MIT, Cambridge, 2017).
They have been awarded with the COAM Emerging 2020 prize and Arquia Innova awards by the Arquia Foundation in 2020.

Vanessa Barragão
(1992)
Textile artist based in Portugal who, through her creations, raises awareness about pollution and climate change, as well as the importance of circular economy and the need to recycle in our daily lives. Her works are handmade, using artisanal techniques and waste from the Portuguese textile industry.
Most of this waste used to be found in the back of textile factory warehouses, taking up a lot of space, before ending up in a landfill.
"One man's trash is another man's gold."
Her beautiful creations and environmentalist vision have garnered hundreds of thousands of followers and have influenced people's perception of the devastating consequences of "fast fashion," encouraging those who admire her work to create sustainably and recycle as much as they can in their daily routines.

Octavi Serra
The work of Girona-based artist, designer and photographer Octavi Serra focuses on capturing the ironies, truisms and frustrations of modern life. Optical illusions and waste products are presented in public spaces and then photographed as part of an engaging philosophical series. The Spanish artist's work is a sign of our times and a reaction to dissatisfaction with the current social landscape. Serra constructs conceptual installations that poke fun at the current culture and question the status quo in a very serious way: each image portrays a message about some kind of sociopolitical problem. Whether it's surveillance, greed, corruption, environmental destruction, selfishness, technology... no stone is left unturned. Whatever the aspect, Serra's sense of disillusionment is evident. In a recent interview, he warns, "We've been sold a base pattern for living in the world, [and] if we don't make an effort to overcome it or change it, it's easy to end up looking like automatons."

Ana Barriga
(Jerez, 1984)
Graduated in Fine Arts from the University of Seville in 2012, where she completed a master's degree in Idea and Production in 2014-15. In her works she tries to find the balance between reason and emotion through a very personal aesthetic. Two apparently contradictory territories that, by friction, generate a type of energy that interests him. She tries to move in the field of playfulness and play, very important elements both in her work and in the way she works. The artist collects objects from flea markets or second-hand stores to create a kind of archive of residual popular culture: children's toys, decorative objects or discarded everyday objects that she then paints, breaks, modifies and assembles as if she were playing, using them to convey an idea, creating the scenes on which most of her paintings are based.
