Pelaires

Cabinet

Palma de Mallorca, Spain

Galeria Pelaires is a key reference point for contemporary art in Spain, with more than 55 years of uninterrupted history. Founded in 1969 by Josep Pinya in Palma de Mallorca, the Sala Pelaires—opened on the street of the same name—was the first space exclusively dedicated to contemporary art in the Balearic Islands. From the beginning, it hosted great names such as Picasso, Miró, Tàpies, and Calder, establishing key collaborations that shaped its history. Its close relationship with Joan Miró propelled its international projection, consolidating it as a key space for modern and contemporary art. In 1972, it presented the first exhibition of Alexander Calder in Spain and the first exhibition of Picasso in Mallorca.

Over the years, Pelaires has maintained a strong commitment to both local and international artists, alternating between established figures and emerging talents. Since the 1980s, it has supported creators from the Balearic Islands such as Ramón Canet and María Carbonero, while also exhibiting renowned Italian Transavantgarde and conceptual artists. In 1990, the gallery moved to the Convent of the Trinitarians, a restored historical site transformed into a contemporary cultural center, expanding its exhibition capabilities and activities.

In its more than five decades of history, Pelaires has participated in international art fairs such as ARCO, Art Miami, and Art Düsseldorf, promoting its artists abroad. Its editorial work has also stood out, with the publication of catalogs and graphic editions of Miró, Tàpies, and other major names. Additionally, it has served as a platform for literature and music, organizing book presentations and poetry recitals.

Pelaires has been known for bringing prestigious international artists to Mallorca—creators whose work had not even been shown in institutional spaces—often through great personal and financial effort. However, the gallery has always supported younger, more daring and committed creators. With the longest uninterrupted trajectory in Spain, the gallery remains a key reference point in the contemporary art scene.

Currently, under the direction of Frederic Pinya, Pelaires continues its innovative legacy, incorporating emerging artists and exploring new trends. Its Pelaires Cabinet space allows for fresher and more dynamic exhibitions, while its general program continues to attract national and international creators.

In recent years, artists such as Nicholas Woods and Alain Urrutia have joined the roster, along with even younger names such as Inês Zenha (Portuguese, based in Paris), Gori Mora (Mallorcan, based in Glasgow), Francesc Rosselló (Mallorcan, based in Mallorca), and Pau Aguiló (Mallorcan, based in London)—all under thirty.

For this reason, Pelaires has decided to participate in CAN ART IBIZA with the Pelaires Cabinet, a project created in 2019 and located on the Noble Floor of the Galería Pelaires. It is a space dedicated to presenting emerging artists or those who, in many cases, are collaborating with the gallery for the first time or showcasing their work in Spain. Moreover, it functions as a platform for collaboration with emerging galleries and smaller projects, fostering exchange with other galleries and institutions.

Special projects are also carried out with artists with whom the gallery maintains an ongoing relationship, both national and international. Through small-format exhibitions, site-specific projects, and video projections, the space hosts proposals that engage with the uniqueness of the setting.
