Kertész

Attila Kertész creates totemic figures guided by the cycle of life, origin and purpose. At the core of his practice lies the exploration of the essential rhythms of existence: birth, unity, creation, proliferation and, finally, decay. His clay sculptures are born from a philosophy in which clay symbolises evolution and transformation; it is the earth we walk on and, at the same time, the ancestral repository of organisms that were once alive. From this primal substrate emerge forms that intertwine to exist together, embodying the energy of creation and the simultaneous potential for dissolution.

In her works, KertĂ©sz refines and fuses masculine and feminine forms into an organic symbiosis that responds to nature’s fundamental impulse: the need to generate life and leave a lasting mark. These self-fertilising entities become life-giving forces, imaginary organisms that prolong the chain of existence since time immemorial. By incorporating botanical motif systems, his sculptures are transformed into clay trees that rise and sprout toward the sky, with stamen-like protuberances, branches, and buds that yearn to perpetuate themselves.

For the artist, the creative process is a physical and primal dialogue with the material. He moulds the pigmented clay with the force of his touch, texturing each surface with thousands of tiny gestures that reveal the resistance, adaptability, and memory of the clay. The matte ceramic surfaces, interrupted by areas of glossy glaze, reinforce the sense of internal vitality and continuous mutation. In these monumental sculptures, Kertész seeks to give form to that eternal impulse that runs through nature and the deeply human desire to create, multiply, and ensure the continuity of existence.
