Coto

Kela Coto is a photographer and video artist whose work revolves around the construction of the contemporary landscape. Her practice explores the limits of objectivity through a poetic approach to the image: it is rooted in a documentary gaze that nonetheless applies decontextualised codes in order to transcend reality. She reflects on ideas such as representation, the notion of the stage, the invisible as a photographable materiality and imagination as a pathway to knowledge. Her research focuses on the search for new languages that question the obsolete axioms underpinning our notion of modernity and progress.

Her work has been shown at venues such as the Off Festival of PHotoESPAÑA, Círculo de Bellas Artes (Madrid), Casa de Velázquez, the Visual Arts Exhibition of the Principality of Asturias, LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial, Museo Barjola and the Centro Niemeyer, among others. She has been awarded residencies at Casa de Velázquez and LABoral, as well as grants and prizes including sponsorship from Laboral Cinemateca for a feature-length film (2022), selection for the DeFoto06 portfolio review, and CCAI grants for projects such as Órbita (2020) and Ampliación del territorio (2014).

Her works are held in public and private collections including the Museo de Bellas Artes de Asturias, the Centro Niemeyer and the Pilar Citoler Collection.
