Petra

Preta

An artist who takes into her own hands her own image, her own voice, her own words, her own identity, her own place, her own justice. Petra.Preta, aka Sara Fonseca da Graça, uses different mediums to express what can be, and are, all subjects capable of being thought about by herself, that is, any subject in the world. Drawing and words are the beginning of everything, they have always been there in the artist's life, but theater was her training. Today, what we see are paintings, installations, performances, films, drawings, books. Visual or written language, whether to read, to see, or to be spoken aloud.

This voice of hers, in the Portuguese context, shows great promise. This multifaceted artist claims for herself the simple right to be herself, representing her body, her books, her space, her rest, her freedom, the things she believes in. “I use my art to meet my needs,” says Sara Fonseca da Graça. These needs are the desire to express, transform, and restore justice in the world around her. It is her place to speak. Vital and human needs. Justice is a Black woman choosing to represent herself, what she believes in, herself, her body, and her voice, as she sees fit. It is choosing to reclaim her stolen rights. For example, she is the one who draws her body. And no one else. We, the public, are asked what is always asked of us: to think about the issues she presents. Attentively.
