Prieto Gaggero

Vicente Prieto Gaggero is a Latin American visual artist and sculptor who completed a Postgraduate Degree in Contemporary Applied Arts, specialising in ceramics, at Escola Massana, Barcelona. His sculptural practice centres on clay as the core of a conscious political and cultural process, establishing a dialogue between pre-colonial techniques and contemporary theory. From this intersection, his work reflects on the complexity of the human condition in the Anthropocene and on our relationships with matter, time, and the urban environment we have constructed.

Through his sculptures, Prieto Gaggero examines how the body has been understood and represented across history, dissecting both the visible surface and what lies beneath to explore the invisible connections between nature, the city, and technology. Fired clay and other organic materialities are placed in tension with synthetic formulations, symbolising ecological collapse and the oscillation between utopia and dystopia that defines an era marked by human impact on the planet.

Influenced by posthumanist thought, his work also confronts his Latin American identity and his migrant experience in Europe. His sculptures propose new ways of reading the body, conceiving it as a space that can be dissected, reconstructed, and transformed—much like cities themselves. Through this approach, Prieto Gaggero reveals a void to be inhabited and articulated, rethinking the relationship between human beings and matter in a world in constant transformation.

He has undertaken residencies in Barcelona, Madrid, and A Coruña, and since 2014 has exhibited his work in Chile, Peru, Costa Rica, Mexico, the United States, and Spain, both individually and collectively.

Vicente Prieto Gaggero lives and works in Madrid.
